One thing I have noticed is many places do not hire at the personnel office. They have everyone go online and send in a resume first. This takes out a very important step in my opinion: The loss of human contact. It was important for me when looking for a job to see someone in person to try and make some type of connection or impact. That is gone now and people trying to find work have to hope someone will read the resume so they can get an interview.

Sites like the above can help people as they have to change how to look for a job. It also means having to be able to write a killer resume.

When I look at resume I tell people right away if I"m snoozing by them. I had a guy come in with a 6 page resume and I told him straight up you need a shorter one. Two pages is perfectly fine if you fill it up. A six page resume would be for a more specialized job that may need a portfolio. Employers use scanning systems too. They use "key words."

It sounds bad but a lot of major companies do it. Especially if they are hiring more than one person for a job or if they have millions of applicants.

I think the best thing we have to offer them where I work is a Resource room with free fax, phone, resume materials, computers, typewriters, staff to assist and copy machines and printers. Doesn't sound like much but man they appreciate it.

And having worked in Public Service for almost 12 years it still amazes me how many adults cannot read or write. So we have faciities to help out with that too. It is all from tax dollars. Granted no one is a miracle worker. Just having the support is really great for the majority. There are free workshops. Ohio is leading the way in job search. I'm proud of our programs. There are not many states that offer those services let alone even a percentage.

It is sad there are many who cannot function when it comes to the basics of reading and writing (comprehension is the problem). With large companies now doing their hiring through the internet, it makes it very difficult to find a good job.

Fast food, service, retail and small Mom and Pop places are the only ones doing the hiring in person it seems. And they do not pay very well and offer very little growth potential.

I can see why companies do what they do as it makes the process easy and weeds out many who are not qualified.

Also, the VA and medical fields would want the six page resumes, but they usually give the pages and ask the questions to be filled out:

What is your experience in this field? etc. I have filled out a few of those in my life.

It is good to have someone who will look at the resume and be truthful about it. People's livelihoods are at stake here, and they need to know if the first thing they send also dooms them.

Here in OH the medical field jobs are mainly applied for online. Since many production factories have now closed(car manufacturers) medical production is a real boom here. I come from ten years working as a public servant. It's better but also has many limitations. I know more about job loss than most and sometimes I wish I didn't but other days I really love being able to help on this end. There is so much information for job seekers it drives me bonkers they don't know how much is offered to them.

Resumes are my least favorite part I wouldn't call my ability to be overly great but knowing how employers think is the main thing and it's surprising how little people know just about the basic do and don'ts. You also get the ones that need help and don't allow you to. Those are the ones that I get really frustrated with. County, state and Federal services are there. They can help people maybe not all but they do help the every day people. It is understandable that people get frustrated with government programs because they have rules and regulations and many applicants so they are slow.

There actually has been over all growth in manufacturing jobs, but who is to say how long it lasts. There are many states which have job retraining programs such as becoming a truck driver, medical/dental (nurses, technicians etc) teachers aides etc.

It is especially frustrating if one is over 40 years old and looking for a job. I had been turned down by many of the fast food joints as they said I was not going to stay there for long. That is true as I would be looking for something better (who wants to be serving fries in their 40s and 50s?).

The worst type of jobs are the ones advertised as "supervisory and managerial positions open". When you get there, you find out it is selling vacuum cleaners (or rug cleaning, Amway etc). You then ask about the supervisor or management jobs and they state you start off by selling (pyramid type schemes) their products. It is misleading, but they do get some people to do it as they need jobs quite badly.

Then there is the pay (or lack of it). It seemed there were many decent wage jobs out there. But most are gone as the car companies hire back laid off employees first. Other manufacturing jobs pay maybe $1 above minimum wage (if that) and have no benefits. (Most hire you as a temp and keep you there without ever offering you a position at the company.)

I do remember people would say when they got out of high school they would work at the steel mills next to their dads. This was all nice until those steel mills closed down and laid everyone off. They moved to South Korea, then to China and now to southern Asia as the labor is cheap.

The sad thing is most of the products made in those very cheap would not cost that much more if they were made here.

The saddest thing is the reports on that huge factory in China which employs hundreds of thousands of people in the most atrocious conditions. They make Apple products there and pay pennies an hour in some jobs. People work over twelve hours a day seven days a week.

The interesting thing is those products would only cost 10 to 20% more if they were made here.

Michael Moore used to have a program on TV about these types of practices and some of the decisions would not make sense at all. The Baby Ruth bar factory was moved out of Illinois as it made too much money. They wanted a tax write off so they closed it down. One thousand people lost their jobs in an instant with no notice.

I think that there is a truth to the fact that no matter where the stuff is made it helps the world economy as a whole. It is cheaper for some things to be made out of this country. It is an unfortunate truth. It isn't fair and I don't agree with it either, but if you can make something a 100 dollars cheaper in China you may opt to do that till your company starts up. Then you are like a free agent you can move it where ever you want and hire whom ever you want. Americans have standards and that is why we won't work for 2 pennies an hour. Our standards are also judged by the powers that be and it is like one big circle.

If the cost of living were a lot lower so would our pay. If greed did not exist we would probably be okay. But siding with the dark forces I think it is human nature.. Shocked

shame on us..
