Speaker : Kelly

Subject : Satanism

Copy of Handout given at 12/1/2011 meeting

What is Satanism? two major trends are Theistic Satanism and Atheistic Satanism. Theistic Satanists venerate Satan as a supernatural deity. In contrast, Atheistic Satanists[4] consider themselves atheists, agnostics, or apatheists and regard Satan as merely symbolic of certain human traits. This categorization of Satanism (which could be categorized in other ways, for example "Traditional" versus "Modern"), is not necessarily adopted by Satanists themselves, who usually would not specify which type of Satanism they adhere to. Some Satanists believe in God in the sense of a Prime Mover but, like Atheistic Satanists, still worship themselves, due to the deist belief that God plays no part in mortal lives.
HistorySatanism as an organized activity did not exist much before the 17th century. As early as the 17th century, however, the catholic church was condemning priests who subverted the magical powers of the holy mass for evil purposes. The Grimoire of Honorious, a magical textbook first printed in the 17th century (but perhaps older), gave instructions for saying masses to conjour demons. In the 17th century, satanic activities were conducted by christians who indulged in the magical/sexual rites of the black mass, presided over by defrocked or unscrupulous priests.
Later on, however, By the early 20th century, Aleister Crowley (known as the black pope) was linked to Satanism. Born 12 October 1875, he called himself "the beast", used the words "life" "love" and "light" to describe Satan and once baptized and crucified a toad as Jesus, he was not a Satanist but a magician and occultist.( (http://www.satanic-kindred.org/history.htm)

Crowley did not like the moral and religious values of his time and was completely against them. espousing a form of libertinism based upon the rule of "Do What Thou Wilt".[1] Because of this, he gained widespread notoriety during his lifetime, and was denounced in the popular press of the day as "the wickedest man in the world." (wikepedia) Crowley was also a member of the Golden Dawn which had other members such as the poet Yeats. He later on went to write the Book of the Law (1904) the opening line in the book reads:
“Had! The manifestation of Nuit.
The unveiling of the company of heaven.
Every man and woman is a star.
Every number is infinite; there is no difference.
Help me, o warrior lord of Thebes, in my unveiling before the Children of men!"
There are hints of the satanic religion in that line a lone. Where it says Every man and woman is a star. Crowley also went on to write the Holy Books of Law and apparently an influence on Adolph Hitler. While not in action mainly in philosophy.
There seems no reason to doubt that, directly or indirectly, Crowley was responsible—at least partially— for feeding Hitler’s dark fantasies and lustful ambitions as a “black messiah” and “scion of darkness.” Crowley, a true Magician and Trickster, would have taken no sides in any battle, but deliberately and consciously played both sides against one another, in good Machiavellian fashion. His goals, however (even when evil), would have always been spiritual, never temporal. In Symmonds’s work, we have the following exchange:
Hitler: “And are you an angel of darkness?” Crowley: “You’ll find out in good time all about me. For the present, I’ll say this: if I were an angel of light, you wouldn’t want to know me.” -(http://www.illuminati-news.com/aleister_crowley1.htm)Aleister Crowley was also said to be an influence on one of the darkest figures in Satanic History, Anton Szandor LaVey.
o]]
Anton Szandor[/i] LaVey
was born in Chicago on April 11,1930. He was an avid musician and taught himself to play the piano at age 10. at 15 became an oboist for the San Francisco Ballet Symphony Orchestra. In 1948 he met Marilyn Monroe and played as her accompanist.
He later married his first wife,Carole, and worked in San Francisco as a criminal photographer. While he was very into criminology he was very disgusted with the violence he had seen in that line of work. He quite his job and went back to playing music in night clubs. He also at the same time began teaching classes on the occult. “LaVey had devised or re-created from historical sources on the Knights Templar , The Hellfire Club, The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and Aleister Crowley. LaVey apparently enjoyed the theatrics of the rituals; he dressed in a scarlet lined cape and kept skulls and other odd objects about. Magic-circle members included actress Jayne Mansfield and film maker Kenneth Anger. “(http://www.satanic-kindred.org/history.htm) “LaVey divorced Carole in 1960 and married Dianne, a 17 year old who worked as a usherette at his friday night occult sessions. The had a daughter, Zeena. From 1960 to 1966 he developed his elitist satanic philosophy. He viewed the devil as a dark force hidden in nature, ruling earthly affairs. Mans true nature, he claimed , is one of lust, pride, hedonism and willfulness, attributes that enable the advancement of civilization. Flesh should not be denied but celebrated. Individuals who stand in the way of achieving what one wants should be cursed.
On Walpurgisnacht (April 30) in 1966, LaVey shaved his head and announced the founding of the Church of Satan. He shrewdly recognized the shock value of using the term church for worshiping the devil and recognized peoples innate for ritual, ceremony and pageantry. He performed satanic baptisms, weddings and funerals, all of which received widespread media coverage. He used a nude woman (partially covered by a leopard skin) as an alter. His wife, Dianne became high priestess of the Church. He baptized Zeena. Karla began giving lectures on Satanism at universities and colleges.
LaVey preached antiestablishmentarianism, self indulgence and all forms of gratification and vengeance. Enemies were to be hated and smashed. Sex was exalted. He opposed the use of drugs, saying they were escapist and unnecessary to achieving natural highs. He also deplored the use of black magic in criminal activity. He did not include the Black Mass in his rituals because he believed the Black Mass to be out of date.”
LaVey elaborated on these ideas in his book The Satanic Bible

:The prologue to The Satanic Bible begins by discussing the concept of gods, good and evil, and human nature. It includes the Nine Satanic Statements:

1. Satan represents indulgence, instead of abstinence!
2. Satan represents vital existence, instead of spiritual pipe dreams!
3. Satan represents undefiled wisdom, instead of hypocritical self-deceit!
4. Satan represents kindness to those who deserve it, instead of love wasted on ingrates!
5. Satan represents vengeance, instead of turning the other cheek!
6. Satan represents responsibility to the responsible, instead of concern for psychic vampires!
7. Satan represents man as just another animal, sometimes better, more often worse than those that walk on all-fours, who, because of his "divine spiritual and intellectual development," has become the most vicious animal of all!
8. Satan represents all of the so-called sins, as they all lead to physical, mental, or emotional gratification!
9. Satan has been the best friend the church has ever had, as he has kept it in business all these years![21]
The Nine Satanic Sins[13]

1. Stupidity
2. Pretentiousness
3. Solipsism
4. Self-deceit
5. Herd Conformity
6. Lack of Perspective
7. Forgetfulness of Past Orthodoxies
8. Counterproductive Pride
9. Lack of Aesthetics

The Eleven Satanic Rules of the Earth
1. Do not give opinions or advice unless you are asked.
2. Do not tell your troubles to others unless you are sure they want to hear them.
3. When in another's lair, show them respect or else do not go there.
4. If a guest in your lair annoys you, treat them cruelly and without mercy.
5. Do not make sexual advances unless you are given the mating signal.
6. Do not take that which does not belong to you unless it is a burden to the other person and they cry out to be relieved.
7. Acknowledge the power of magic if you have employed it successfully to obtain your desires. If you deny the power of magic after having called upon it with success, you will lose all you have obtained.
8. Do not complain about anything to which you need not subject yourself.
9. Do not harm little children.
10. Do not kill non-human animals unless you are attacked or for your food.
11. When walking in open territory, bother no one. If someone bothers you, ask them to stop. If they don’t stop, destroy them.

Best discussed in an interview with Peter H. Gilmore.

LaVeyan Satanism
Main article: LaVeyan Satanism
LaVeyan Satanism is a religion founded in 1966 by Anton Szandor LaVey. Its teachings are based on individualism, self-indulgence, and "eye for an eye" morality. Unlike Theistic Satanists, LaVeyan Satanists are atheists, agnostics and apatheists who regard Satan as a symbol of man's inherent nature.[23] According to religioustolerance.org, LaVeyan Satanism is a "small religious group that is unrelated to any other faith, and whose members feel free to satisfy their urges responsibly, exhibit kindness to their friends, and attack their enemies".[24] Its beliefs were first detailed in The Satanic Bible and it is overseen by the Church of Satan.
[edit] Symbolic Satanism
Symbolic Satanism[25][26] is the observance and practice of Satanic philosophies, customs and rituals.[27] In this interpretation of Satanism, the Satanist does not worship Satan in the theistic sense, but is an adversary to all spiritual creeds and religions.
Luciferianism
Main article: LuciferianismLuciferianism can be understood best as a belief system or intellectual creed that venerates the essential and inherent characteristics that are affixed and commonly given to Lucifer. Luciferianism is often identified as an auxiliary creed or movement of Satanism, due to the common identification of Lucifer with Satan. Some Luciferians accept this identification and/or consider Lucifer as the "light bearer" and illuminated aspect of Satan, giving them the name of Satanists and the right to bear the title. Others reject it, giving the argument that Lucifer is a more positive and easy-going ideal than Satan. They are inspired by the ancient myths of Egypt, Rome and Greece, Gnosticism and traditional Western occultism.

LaVey died October 29, 1997 but his legacy lives on. Satanism – the atheistic version- is one of the fastest growing religions of our times. LaVey was also known as a fraud in some media circles stating that he never did half of the things he stated he had done. One of the many things that people state was that he was not original in his way of thinking. Nor was he as kind as his followers would say later on. However, much is speculative and those that want to believe he was truly an evil man will believe all the negative things about him.

Personally in all of the research he may have indeed been slightly crazy but also very intelligent. You can read the excerpts from the 40 Myths of Anton Szandzor LaVey here: http://usminc.org/satanism4.html

Of course always keeping in mind the source for most of the material is not necessarily validated. Still I will leave it up to you to decide for yourself. Yet, one thing is certain that is Satanism is very much a religion and there are hundreds or possibly thousands that follow it’s teachings.

In an interview with actor, writer, Winter Laake, he discusses this with John B. Wells. Here is an excerpt.

Upon meeting adjuring Pat spoke about her understanding of Crowley and her first encounter of of his works at a new age store in Cleveland when she was young. She discussed how it made her feel very uneasy after looking at his books and some collectables at the shop on Crowley.

Group discussed their beliefs and Greg asked about Possession and how that came into play if they were whorshiping the deity known as Satan.

this is my best effort at recalling the meeting. But thanks to all who came and listened.

Note: I am not a satanist but am quite fascinated by the idea that someone would think it was a good idea.

Fascinating group minutes on a rather interesting subject. I never knew about atheistic Satanists and learned a lot.

While I am several hundred miles away and can't show up for a meeting anytime soon, I will enjoy these minutes from your group. Thank you for sharing.

Max you are very welcome.

They are slow to come though as the admin secretary of the group has not been able to make the meetings lately. And with the hault on meetings until February it has been difficult to keep up. But we are 4 years in the learning and sharing of knowledge and experiences. The idea is that each one of us teach the other group member about one of our abilities or things we have a vast knowledge in. At times we have been very lucky to organize larger meetings with local psychics and allow them to teach us about their abilities to learn. Because all things Preternatural can also be science minded as well. It is fun. We enjoy ourselves. Food especially. cheers

Of course there is no one from stopping your own meetings in your local area and sharing the ideas with us here. bom

That is a good idea. I will look into finding like minded peoples to forming a group dedicated to these subjects, from New Age to Astrology. Open minded people can apply, including atheists, Christians and anyone who wants to attend.

Maybe we can do monthly pizza meetings at a favorite eatery of mine. bounce

This can be fun, thanks for mentioning it! afro

FOOD IS A MUST!!! Never skimp on the food. Out meetings are held usually bi- weekly or once a month.

Usually at a different location (someone's house) each time. So not to get bored by same locale all the time.

Have and agenda.

Have a flyer about the subject so you can collect information on past subjects

Send reminders

If if is a small grouping (3 or so ) the meetings can be very informal.

I gave everyone a note pad and a folder and a pen at the first meeting.

Later one we had t-shirts made that my boyfriend designed of field trips.

We have been to some haunted locations and taken photos. some have been really cool, but always make sure you respect the locations. Especially ghostly places. =0)
