Nothing worse than trying to train your dog to be a socialized little guy when you can't find him friends.

I can't take him to dog parks yet. So that is out of the question. Plus being a Pit Bull it is hard getting people to except him as a suitable playmate for their dog.

There was an agility club for dogs when I lived in Louisiana. It was great for teaching dogs how to be social and also great exercise for them. Maybe that is something to look into?

I was looking online for local dog play dates and then I was sort of wondering if it would be a good idea until he gets some more training.

He is one of those that gets really overly excited when he sees other dogs and then plays rudely with them

kind of like going up to someone punching them in the face and then saying "want to drink a beer with me?"

Not working. So I am starting off slow. My aunt has a boxer she said we can see how they do.

It is a longer process than most people realize. Socialization when it doesn't happen in puppyhood can cripple a dog later in life.

I friend of mine bred dogs and had some health problems so he couldn't socialize the dogs with people when they were young. I would get a few to care for as he mended and it took me a long time for them to trust me. Getting them to walk on a leash took a long time and I had to practice in the fenced in back yard so they realized what was going on.

It is sad when they don't get the dog or people skills as such a young age as they take much longer trying to figure out what we want of them.

Good luck with the socializing. It takes a while when they have problems, but it is worth it in the end.

My male Jack has that problem.
He was attacked by another dog when he was a pup,
now he is reluctant to play with other dogs and will bite them if he gets a chance.

We have an older female that he tolerates, and sometimes lets her chase him....trying to find doggy play dates! Daughterdogwagging

Most dogs respect senior aged dogs. I don't know if they sense the age of the older dog, but it is rare for them to attack or do harm to them. This is from my experience, and of course there are probably some dogs who will attack a senior dog.

It might be the sense the older dog is not a threat to their alpha status.

My dog (as you can see from my avatar photo) is a lazy bum haha

he is a pit bull terrier / boston mix but he has that feisty streak of the boston terrier but the laziness of the pit bull terrier. They were bred from bull dogs so they are known to suffer from allergies and have large amounts of active energy and at the same time be extremely lazy.

My aunt has a boxer that is female boxer we are going to try and get them together. The thing with pit bull terriers is at a certain age the anti dog gene usually kicks in without proper socialization. I don't want a dog agressive dog on my hands.

Pit bulls have enough bad press without another one getting into trouble. So the way I was taught to train him with other dogs works pretty good. They have you keep both dogs on a leash. IF he barks and gets too hyper or seems too agressive he is pulled back from the other dog. When he is good he gets to sniff the other dog smell and interact.

It is timely but he is extremely smart for getting ran over by a car! Although we do joke he may have brain damage. geek All in love..

He picks up on things pretty quickly so training isn't something I think will take too long. He just needs the exposure. He is 2 years and 6 months.

My cats are the alphas in my house. He gets a long better with my 16 year old male cat than any other animal.
