Green Energy: Will it ever become a reality? Empty

The President of the United States went on TV to address the nation about the need for new energy sources to get us off oil and other fossil fuels. He was talking about the bold ideas of solar, wind and other energies untapped. The USA must begin the research to become the leaders of this new frontier.

The President who gave that speech was Gerald R Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George Bush, Bill Clinton, George W Bush and Barack Obama. Even Richard Nixon started the dialog on this when he was in office and the Oil Embargo Crisis of 1973 began.

It has been nearly 40 years now and we still have not begun the major research needed to get us away from fossil fuels and take us into the future. Look at many older science fiction movies as they look at what 2001 had to offer in energy and transportation. They seemed to predict the internal combustion engine would be obsolete.

The upside of this is there has been some progress with auto emissions at an all time low for newly made vehicles. The ones on the new car lots now emit less than 10% of the pollutants the ones sold in 1973 did. Also, there is a push for electric vehicles with some companies getting into the hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. The batteries are now made of recyclable material and that is also good for the environment.

But they will still need to be recharged, and most of the power plants are coal fueled. We do need to really take the idea of alternative methods seriously. Just like when JFK told us we would go to the Moon and we did it ahead of schedule. If we did the same thing on energy back in 1975 when President Ford gave his speeches on the issue, we would be weaned of oil.

Solar energy is taking a beating because of some political fallout, even though there have been major breakthroughs in the technology. Wind energy (using turbines) are also getting a big lift as they are going to be used to bring electricity to military bases (and housing) in many areas. Geothermal energy is also being developed, but it seems to be left in the dark so to speak when discussions of alternative energy.

Basically, we need to wake up and really focus on new energies for the USA and the world. While we are taking baby steps now, we need to take giant leaps to really move forward.

All of these are alternatives, and yes they help.
What we need is a replacement for oil and gas.
And there are none at the moment.

I say this because there are so many things that depend on oil, that are not energy related.
Drugs, plastics, polymers, cleaners, even alcohol, fertilizer, insecticide, your computer, smart phone, all need oil.
You run heavy industry on windmills and solar power and products will be cost prohibited.

The problem being is that oil is still cheaper than the alternatives.

We need total new energy, cold fusion, safer nuclear, hydrogen conversion on a massive scale.
The problem is most new energy ideas consume more energy than they can currently generate.

Wind farms are killing many birds and disrupt flyways according to many environmentalist.
They are also noisy, which seems to piss off locals, not in my neighborhood complaints.
Solar collection farms are accused of destroying habitat of wild places.

So even with "Green Energy" there are still environmental concerns. sunny

I do think they can make oil and fuel based products from weeds and grass clippings. The research is moving forward in that area and I for one hope they really take it serious.

But we love our gas powered engines for now. It is going to take more than $5 a gallon gas for us to start wanting the government to do something about it.

I want to be an optimistic about this, but it takes a lot of energy to do so. (pun intended)

I do think it will have to be done much sooner than later as we start to look elsewhere for oil.

It seems that a lot of the ideas they come up with sound amazing until they are acted out upon then they don't go so well or become overly expensive. I am of course thinking of the farmers that are farming for corn oil as alternative for other stuff. They make it so expensive for them. Then the stuff they feed the animals comes from that same drab.

Solar energy seems to be the best idea in my book but even that has some faults. It is smart to use nature as a form of energy since all things have energy. It is just unfortunate they cannot come up with a better way of creating the energy without hurting things like the planet.

Please remember that the government runs the Post Office and Am Trac.
Both are mismanaged and going broke.
SS is on it's way to complete failure.
Many say they run the military, that's only true to an extent.
Military leaders run the military, the cost of which is extreme.

Are you sure you want the government involved?

Right now the only serious research is being done by energy companies.
They are smart enough to know if we run out of oil, they must have a back up to stay in business.

The sad thing is Big Oil has a huge say in this type of research. I do think they can actually thrive as we will always need bio diesel fuels. The service stations can be retrofitted for hydrogen fuel cell and quick electrical charging (when it is perfected).

The other sad thing is it is up to us (the citizens) to really want this. In the long run it will be difficult and there will be a lot of failures before successes. But it is needed so we can have a secure future for our planet and our descendants.

I think that it is hard for us to really know what we want when we are thrown so many things at once. We are constantly complacent with the things in media we are told we want from Wendy's gorgeous burgers to Dairy Queen shakes to new 3D tvs.

I did recently see a commercial here in OHIO for Ohio Green Energy. Maybe advertisement is the way to go. As long as they are explaining what it is to the general uneducated groups out there.

It is also good for the refuse companies to start a recycling program and spread the news on how it is done.

Once people do see how much they can recycle instead of just throwing out, they will be quite amazed.

I have been surprised at my house it is half and half when it comes to recycling waste. The amount of plastics used are quite staggering.

I do my point to keep Mother Ceres happy!

I recycle stuff with in my house too. I reuse bags and boxes for storing things.

There is a nice article on the development of non-edible plants for bio-fuels:

http://content.usatoday.com/communities/greenhouse/post/2012/05/plant-based-biofuels-could-power-nearly-a-third-of-vehicles/1

This is what we need more of as it is a resource which can be renewed and does not pollute as much as it once did. It takes research and years of work, but it looks like it is paying off.

I do see the day when lawn clippings and yard waste are hauled off to make bio-diesel fuel for the trains, planes and trucks.
