It is interesting we tell children to grow up and yet we get upset if something happens to them. "Where was the adult supervision?" is asked when trouble happens.

I have seen where many kids under 18 are arrested and will be charged as adults. We are told they 'know better' and should face their consequences. There is a hazing charge against these three teen boys and they have been charged as adults:

At the same time a child of a celebrity at age 20 is charged with having an open beer and possessing a fake ID. If we are supposed to treat them and charge them as adults at age 16, why can't they drink a beer at age 20?

I am not saying don't punish wrongdoing or coddle them when they need a swat on the rear, but we are sending them mixed messages through the media all the time. I think we have to take a serious look at this and find some middle ground.

If they can't drink alcohol until they are 21, then they can't be charged as an adult until they are 21 either. The same argument for their lack of maturity in drinking can be used in their commission of a crime.

Just my two cents here.

I couldn't agree more. I absolutely HATE it when I see kids being charged for adult crimes. I know there are those out there who would disagree with me, but they are KIDS. Maybe their parents are rubbish or maybe they are just bad seeds, but more often than not they are poor and children of color. How often do you see rich white kids in court system, let alone being tried as adults. And before anyone says rich white kids don't commit crimes...that's crap. I know that the elite private schools in my hometown had more drug and alcohol problems than my "inner city" public schools. Perhaps, if our country would invest in education for ALL children in a serious way, not just give it lip service in an election year, then our kids wouldn't be on the streets commiting crimes. I think it is telling that in Ohio, the Supreme Court has declared the school funding system unconstitutional 5 TIMES, and the legislature has done nothing. In our state, schools are funded by local property taxes. So the property taxes from the affluent neighborhoods fund their local schools and the property taxes from the poor neighborhoods fund their local schools. The results...kids in affluent neighborhoods get more money spent on their education than kids in poor neighborhoods. Is this "Justice for all"?

Sorry for the rant...education is something I'm very passionate about...in case you hadn't noticed. And I'm tired of people who want to blame poor children for the circumstances they were born into and in many cases the rubbish parents they didn't choose.

In other areas of the world the children are given more responsibility and are at a higher mental maturity rate. They are treated like people and in return treat adults with respect.

It used to be a child could get the death penalty until recently. Now they are arguing in the courts whether or not a life sentence on a minor child is too harsh.

I got on my soapbox here after reading so many incidents out there and the 20 year old with the open beer just got to me.

I would let my boys drink a beer at my house and everything was fine. They didn't get drunk and their friends had to have parental permission to have a beer (some did) as well as spend the night at the house. It just seems stupid they can die for our country at 18 (younger at times) but go to jail and pay a large fine at 20 for having a beer.
