I have found these books to be highly entertaining about alleged monster sightings and such:

Monsters of West Virginia: Mysterious Creatures in the Mountain State by Rosemary Ellen Guiley

http://www.amazon.com/Monsters-West-Virginia-Mysterious-Creatures/dp/0811710289/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1339715099&sr=1-1&keywords=monsters+of+west+virginia

The monsters in that book are a half day's drive from where you are at. The book deals with the famous and others that have not been heard of before.

Monsters of Wisconsin: Mysterious Creatures in the Badger State by Linda S Godfrey

http://www.amazon.com/Monsters-Wisconsin-Mysterious-Creatures-Badger/dp/0811707482/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1339715262&sr=1-1&keywords=monsters+of+wisconsin

Wisconsin is noted for their werewolves, but how many have heard of the dragon sightings?

THE BEAST OF BOGGY CREEK: The True Story of the Fouke Monster by Lyle Blackburn

http://www.amazon.com/THE-BEAST-OF-BOGGY-CREEK/dp/1933665572/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1339715357&sr=1-1&keywords=the+legend+of+boggy+creek

Easily one of the more well known and scariest of Bigfoot encounters finally gets a good book treatment. The author looks at past encounters and other ones after the famous (or infamous) encounters that brought us the cult movie of the same name.

They are quick reads and should be at libraries by now. They are all relatively new and up to date on the sightings.

Just finished another Monster Book about Illinois Monsters:

Monsters of Illinois: Mysterious Creatures in the Prairie State by Troy Taylor

http://www.amazon.com/Monsters-Illinois-Mysterious-Creatures-Prairie/dp/0811736407/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1341978177&sr=1-1&keywords=monsters+of+illinois

This one has a few vampire encounters in Chicago of all places. People there know the difference between a crazed homeless person and a rather bizarre looking vampire like entity. The book is short, but the vampire section alone is worth it.

It might be fun to have everyone read a different monster book from states they either lived in or traveled to. Then each of you can discuss the favorite creatures and which case you think it the best out there.

It would make for a perfect Halloween themed outing, although the encounters in those books are true.
