Green Living: Recycling

Last month the refuse collection company gave all houses two large cans: One for trash and the other for recyclables. In the summer there will be a third large can for grass clippings/branches and yard waste. This is great news for those of us who see recycling as a good way to protect Mother Earth.

It has always been known they were able to recycle glass, metal (aluminum etc), newspapers and cardboard. But they now can recycle all forms of plastic from bottles to the styrofoam containers.

I also like to separate my trash for the recyclables as it keeps me busy. I also like watching the programs on how they recycle these materials. It makes a lot of sense if it also saves us money in the long run also.

They also are able to recycle most electronic items now instead of throwing them in a landfill where the toxic materials can get into the water systems. There is very little they can't recycle out there, and I can't think of much at the top of my head. Here are some areas they are working on:

Using grass clippings and yard waste to make bio diesel fuels (along with used cooking oil) for trains and trucks.

Using the methane gas from landfills to heat factories and other facilities.

Working on recycling spent nuclear fuel (this would be huge, and the technology is moving quickly to make it a reality in the next ten years).

Many people still don't like to recycle as they think they are being told to do so. I do hope they reconsider as it is not for them, but for their children, grandchildren and Mother Earth.

Sadly, Green is just another word for making money.

We have been recycling our garbage in Washington State, for years and years now. We have had they 3 containers for many years. We are extremely diligent about it.
But I still know people who refuse to throw a pop can in the proper waste container.
These are the same folks who think the world "owes them a living" and "rules are for other people".

I'd liked to tell Serial Mom about these folks!!!

I know many products state they are "eco-friendly" which are far from it so I am careful what I buy. I do think recycling cans, plastics. paper and other materials is the way to go.


It only takes a few seconds to put aluminum cans and other materials in the recycle bin. It saves on the landfills as they will delightfully charge us to haul away the trash somewhere else when the landfills fill up.

I do think Green should be where the money is also.

Where I live they used to give you two.. well one was a recycle bucket and then they took it away we now have one gigantic trash can. I try to recycle stuff with in my home too. Shredded paper can make a great way to send christmas gifts long distances. My newspaper I use in the litter box instead of a bag. And grocery bags I use as trash bags in the bathroom or for storage. I almost NEVER toss them.

However, I have been known to be environmentally unfriendly when i'm cleaning my entire house. I have days when i just wan't to jump out of my skin-so everything around me seems dirty or old.. (I'm mildly ocd.. ) Then after a day of home cleaning EVERYTHING I will go back to being normal.. Usually tax time is the worst because not only do I do these forums, work a full time job, but i also have my own business..

Tax time I go through everything and purge out my home office.

A full time job, a forum to run and a business you own. Tethys, what can't you do?

I do say it only takes a little to go a long way and every small step helps in the long run.

I know.. Perhaps I am a robot.. hahaha

We just had a dying tree cut down and will have the stump taken out Saturday. In a few weeks, we are going to have another tree planted in its place. I am thinking oak or maple, good shade trees!

Now that is how to recycle: Replace the dying tress cut down with another shade tree. Many people cut the trees down and don't replace them.

That is really cool...one of my favorite actors Ian Sommerhalder seems to be one of the only actors I have seen in a really long time that really really truly cares about the world and it's issues. He started his own foundation known as ISfoundation and the people working around him are really big into GREEN ENERGY resources and research. Hope he stays that much of a nature lover.. so many just do it to look "good." At least from the last few years he has really shown he cares by the way he treats people as well.

There are some who do their charities only to get their name in the paper. Very few are the real deal when it comes to actually caring about what the charity is. It used to be an actor found an obscure disease and became the spokesperson for it. They couldn't pronounce it or knew what the symptoms were, but they made sure their name was on the telethon.

I do think people should put their money where their mouth is when it comes to these issues. If one cuts a tree down, replace it no matter what the cost is. It will save much energy costs as the shade and leaves reduce the heat.
